This poem is titled "Darkness" by Lord Byron

Torben's Favorite: Darkness

"Darkness" is a poem Lord Byron wrote in 1816. It is his vision of the end of the universe. The poem is gloomy and uses a depressing tone constantly referring to death and agony. This poem is directly related to the personal depression Lord Byron had himself. This poem is one of his darkest works. It encompasses what happens to man when they are reduced to a state where no love, compassion or heroic action exists.

I like this poem because of it's dark themes. I think it is extremely depressing but I find it refreshing to find a poem like this from Lord Byron. It does not have anything to do with women or satire. It is simply about the end times and I feel it provides a detailed glimpse into what the end of the world will be like.

Torben's Least Favorite: The Destruction of Sennacherib

This is a poem based on a biblical war. Lord Byron writes about the biblical account from his point of view. It speaks of a city being destroyed by Assyrians. The poem is known for its rhythmic form and is highly regarded because of this fact. However, most critics do not interpret it because of it's surface language. Most of it is understood at face value.

I do not like this poem because I feel like it is just a retelling of a story. I do not see any themes other than war and destruction. I feel like there is not any meaning to it or hidden lessons. I can appreciate its form and rhythm but I feel like Lord Byron wrote this for the sake of writing it and it has no meaning to himself or others.

Zac's Favorite:

On This Day I Complete My Thirty-Sixth Year

This poem is about a man that has been hurt and still wants to be loved. He decides to fight in the war; he is fighting for passion and for the freedom of his country. His passions awakes when its time for battle. He finds out through the battle that some soldiers are fighting for unworthy reason and they die in the battle. After the battle he realizes they had lost a lot of youth in battles. He is deeply saddened about this. He finally realizes that a soldier’s grave is the only place they can rest in piece.

I like this poem because of the war aspect of it. War is a brutal and horrible thing, but some how Lord Byron has managed to bring some beauty to it. I also like it because it is one of his only poems about his country and not about love of women. It helps show he has versatility and has thoughts about other things than women.

Zac's Least Favorite:

And Thou art Dead, as Young and Fair

This poem is about a man who lost the love of his life. He talks about how special she was when they were together. They had the best times when they were together. He talks about how she won’t feel pain or hurt anymore because she is dead. She was too young to die a long painful death too. She never let the disease get to her either. He says that he was not strong enough to watch her die either. He has good memories but he is sad she’s gone forever. He ends by saying that his heart and his love are buried with her.

I don’t like this poem because it is depressing and it had a very depressing tone. Poems about death and losing the ones you love are not appealing to me.
